Urban Exposure Project

March 18, 2020 - May 20, 2020

What is Urban Exposure Project (UEP)?

UEP is an annual photography program that invites participants to learn about social issues impacting our city, while learning how to tell stories through photography. The program includes technical photography training and explores topics like poverty, vulnerable kids, and community building. The program is open to all skill levels and at the end of the 10 week program, the participants’ work is showcased at a public exhibit. UEP is a Gen Next program, a United Way initiative that brings together people in their 20s and 30s to do local good.

Registration for the 2020 program has closed.

Meet this year’s facilitators and mentors

Jesse Tamayo

Mentor

“Supporting your community is really important because it allows anyone the opportunity to give back in a variety of ways. In a society where negativity seems to be on the rise in the news and social media, we can definitely benefit from the positivity that comes from supporting our own communities. We are most influenced by our immediate environment, so by elevating everyone around us through positive action, we in turn benefit ourselves as part of the community and for future generations to come.”

Jeremy Fokkens

Mentor

“It’s more than just about a group of individuals with similar values and ideas. Community is inclusion, helping one another through thick and thin. Community is about giving back and being a part of something that is bigger than yourself. Community is at the heart of being human.”

“It has been important to me to learn more about the different social issues Calgarians are facing. It helps me understand what people in my city might be going through, and what I can do to help. It’s great to know about all the resources available for the community so we can help make Calgary a better place to live for everyone!”

“Photography is the medium through which I discovered myself as an artist, and Calgary is the community that enabled that. I want to do the same for a new generation of aspiring photographers: to lift them up through the sharing of knowledge and experience.”
