Local social issues can be tough to spot

They’re complicated, they don’t look the same for everyone, and in our busy lives, these social issues can be easy to ignore. And you can’t solve a problem if you don’t know it exists.

At United Way, we’re working to make local social issues #UNIGNORABLE, issues like poverty, mental health, and social isolation.

You can help. Show your local love for the places you call home by donating and getting involved—and together we can make these issues #UNIGNORABLE.

#UNIGNORABLE social issues

The biggest issues facing our community can be tough to see and even harder to solve. These are three of the key issues United Way is working to tackle.

Poverty

Poverty

Meeting basic needs in our community has grown increasingly difficult. Between job losses and increased living costs, many individuals and families are accessing food and shelter supports for the first time. Poverty continues to shift to the suburbs as well, where unemployed parents struggle to pay their mortgages and feed their families while looking for work.

Mental health

Mental health

Mental health impacts us all. Access to mental health supports is vital, but can be hindered by social isolation, poverty, and a shortage of available services. In kids, mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder can have lasting impact for mental health and emotional stability as an adult.

Social isolation

Social isolation

There are serious physical, mental, and emotional consequences when people are secluded. People who are socially isolated are at a higher risk of developing health problems, slipping into poverty, facing mental health challenges, and having their quality of life reduced. Without access to social connections, there can be dire consequences for their overall well-being.
